Farm Shop Owner Checks CCTV After Theft—Not Prepared for the Culprit

A village farm shop in rural Scotland has been left with a very different kind of “shoplifting” incident to report after CCTV captured an unexpected culprit on camera.

When a cake went missing from the South Percyhorner Farm Shop, owner Gary Summers watched back the moment on the store’s camera—only to discover that golden retriever Amber was the thief.

“The shop is an honesty-box policy so is unattended,” Summers told Newsweek. “People take what they want—vegetables, bakery, meat, cheese and lots more—and just leave money. No one mans the shop, hence why the dog made the most of it.”

In the video, Amber the golden was seen padding into the quiet shop, heading straight toward the shelves and bakery area, before making off with a Madeira cake—and exiting with the confidence of someone who knows exactly what they came for.

A Viral Moment

After the unexpected theft on November 29, Summers shared the story and video on the store’s Facebook page where it has now gained thousands of likes and comments.

In the comments, people left their reactions—and many stood up for Amber the dog.

“Sorry picture is blurry so we can’t be positive what was taken my client is innocent,” posted one viewer.

Another wrote: “Aww how cute is this. I’m sure you will forgive her.”

Summers said the story was never meant to be anything more than a bit of fun, but after he posted it online, it quickly took off.

“I thought it would be a funny story and make people smile,” Summers said. “It went crazy through Facebook quickly. It’s at over 2.2 million views already.”

Earlier this week, another unexpected shop visitor gained attention worldwide. At a Virginia liquor store, a wild raccoon who was described as “intoxicated” broke in, ransacked the shop and later passed out in a bathroom.

Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter told Newsweek it was “a first for one to be in a store in this condition,” but assured everyone that the animal had no signs of injury and was later re-released to the wild.

While the canine cake theft did leave Summers out of pocket, he said that he has no plans to raise a dispute with the owner.

“Amber’s owner is my cousin,” he said. “So, no, I wouldn’t be asking for the money back.”
