The unusual reason a dachshund started ignoring his owner has left internet viewers in hysterics, leading many to laud his new hobby, which, let’s just say, is very niche.
Dog owner Jennifer West captured a hilarious video of her 1-year-old dachshund, named Bagels, showing how truly selective his hearing can be. During the clip, Bagels could be seen lying on the floor, facing away from West and looking quite grumpy.
As West, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, tried to get Bagels’ attention, she noticed that he seemed to be ignoring her. He could definitely hear her and didn’t have any distractions, so why wasn’t he responding? West told Newsweek that Bagels is usually “very responsive” and “never ignores” her normally, so this was incredibly out of character.
At the time, West had just turned the TV off because it was time to do the school run (with Bagels in tow, of course). Evidently, the dog was far more interested in what they had been watching.
West said: “It was time for me to get in the school pickup line, and I said, ‘OK, Bagels, let’s go to school.’ He always immediately jumps up but he immediately lay down and wouldn’t turn around.
“I started saying all his favorite words and then I just threw in, ‘Do you want to watch a show about deer?’ as a joke at the end. I really did not know that he was going to respond like that.”
As soon as West mentioned the deer documentary, Bagels instantly perked up and turned around to face her. Indeed, the cheeky dachshund stared at her until she put his favorite show back on TV.
Fortunately, they were still early so West allowed Bagels to watch the documentary for 15 minutes before they had to leave. She told Newsweek that he “intently watched it,” and it has become his favorite pastime.
West couldn’t resist sharing the video of Bagels ignoring her on TikTok (@misswestie04) and explained that he’s “absolutely obsessed with deer.” In just a matter of days, the clip has gone viral with over 347,700 views and more than 75,000 likes at the time of writing.
West recently started showing Bagels the videos and documentaries about deer. They have been going on long trail walks and they frequently see deer while they are out. The owner said that it became a game for her and Bagels to spot the deer, and after seeing his reactions, West started showing him YouTube videos about whitetail deer at home.
“I noticed that he intently watched them, which he has never done before. I even tested him out on different animals like moose, and I would change the channel to a bear or even reindeer. But he’s only interested in whitetail deer,” West said.
She continued: “Bagels is a hilarious dog who loves to swim, sleep, sunbathe, dig holes and go on adventures in the woods to look for deer. I’d say he’s a typical dachshund with a twist of golden retriever.”
The online response to Bagels’ antics has been overwhelmingly positive. Social media users have lauded the dachshund and his unusual hobby, leading to more than 1,230 comments on the TikTok video so far.
West is regularly privy to Bagels and his quirky habits, but she said she is so glad she could share this moment with the world too.
