Five Christmases ago, a dog later named Mighty Moe was abandoned on a rural road in northeastern Kansas. Today, he is still waiting for a family to call his own.
Mighty Moe, a 6-year-old bull terrier and boxer mix, was found on River Road in Atchison after being dumped by his former owners, according to the Humane Society of Atchison. The dog survived on his own for nearly a year, sleeping wherever he could and scavenging for food before rescuers finally found him.
“He was in horrible condition,” a spokesperson for the Humane Society of Atchison told Newsweek. “He was abandoned because they didn’t want him anymore.”
After his rescue, shelter staff promised Mighty Moe he would never be alone again. But, while he was saved from life on the streets, he has now spent four Christmases—and is approaching a fifth—inside the shelter.
“This Christmas will make five long years without a home, without a couch, without a family to call his own,” the shelter said in a post on Facebook.
Mighty Moe is not dog-friendly or cat-friendly, which the shelter believes has made placing him more difficult. Because of those limitations, he must be the only pet in the home. Still, staff say he has plenty of love to give.
“He doesn’t want to share love,” the shelter said. “He just wants to finally belong.”
Despite being overlooked, Moe has remained patient, staff said. There has been no serious adoption interest so far, even as other dogs come and go.
“All he wants is to sleep inside where it’s warm and safe,” the spokesperson said. “He would love to have his own bed.”
Shelter workers say Mighty Moe’s story highlights the long-term impact of pet abandonment and the challenges faced by animals with special placement needs—especially during the holidays, when adoptions often slow.
As another Christmas approaches, the Humane Society of Atchison is asking the public to share Moe’s story in hopes that the right person will see it.
“He’s waited longer than any dog ever should,” the shelter said. “All he’s asking for is one chance, one home, one person who won’t leave.”
