MANILA, Philippines — "Top Gun" and "Top Gun: Maverick," the movies that catapulted and cemented Tom Cruise as a movie star, are coming back to Philippine cinemas for a limited time.
Leading cinema chain SM Cinemas announced that the two films would be screening for a week beginning May 13 as part of the original movie's 40th anniversary celebrations.
The first "Top Gun" released on May 16, 1986 saw Cruise play Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a cocky naval aviator who is sent to train at the titular program formally called the United States Navy's Fighter Weapons School.
The first film also featured Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Tom Skerritt, Tim Robbins, Meg Ryan, and Anthony Edwards as Maverick's radar intercept officer and best friend Nick "Goose" Bradshaw.
Cruise reprised Maverick in the 2022 sequel, which sees his character returning to Top Gun to train a new batch of recruits, including Goose's son, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller.
Kilmer reprised his role as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky having battled throat cancer for years. It was his last acting role before passing away in 2025.
Newcomers like Teller included Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Ed Harris, and Glen Powell.
Paramount Pictures recently confirmed that a third "Top Gun" movie was in development with Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer back on board.
