MANILA, Philippines — Netflix has begun production on a live-action "Gundam" movie in Australia, with Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo leading the cast.

"Sweet Tooth" showrunner Jim Mickle helms the project based on the Japanese media franchise famous for its giant robots or "mobile suits."

The upcoming film will take on an original story about rival mech pilots fighting on opposite sides of a decades-long war between Earth and its space former colonies.

"As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they're pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity," goes an early logline. "With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is 'Gundam' like it's been seen before."

Sweeney is best known for her roles in HBO shows "Euphoria" and "The White Lotus," while Centineo rose to fame for Netflix projects "Sierra Burgess is a Loser," "The Perfect Date," "The Recruit," and the "To All The Boys" franchise.

They will be joined by Michael Mando, Nonso Anozie, Jackson White, Shioli Kutsuna, Javon "Wanna" Walton, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, Ida Brooke, Gemma Chua-Tran, and Jason Isaacs.

Legendary Pictures is producing the Netflix film in partnership with Bandi Namco Filmworks. Mickle is also producing with his partner Linda Moran through their company Nightshade, alongside Cale Boyter, Ali Mendes, and Enzo Marc.

Both Sweeney and Centineo are credited producers while Matthew Jenkins, Makoto Asanuma, and Naohiro Ogata board as executive producers.
