MANILA, Philippines – Unfortunately, it’s turning out up to be a routine. A storm comes, the neighborhood floods, and Anamarie Astillero wakes up to a moat of garbage surrounding her house in Cainta, Rizal.

Her house lies on the low end of a street, so she ends up having to deal with the whole neighborhood’s trash washed downhill overnight. It’s a grim metaphor for Cainta and neighboring areas that serve as a catch basin for the metropolis’ floodwater wending its way to Laguna Lake.

This is the situation Astillero and her neighbors grappled with during Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon then, and it’s what they’re dealing with now, the morning after Tropical Storm Enteng and the enhanced southwest monsoon at its tail. – Rappler.com
