
MANILA, Philippines – The future of Philippine weightlifting brims with optimism as Elreen Ando and Rosegie Ramos delivered in the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jiangshan, China.
Both under 30, 26-year-old Ando and 21-year-old Ramos each won three silver medals in the continental showdown as part of the Philippines’ seven-silver haul through Monday, May 12.
A two-time Olympian, Ando finished second in snatch (102kg), clean and jerk (130kg), and total (232kg) in the women’s 64kg division.
China’s Li Shuang bested Ando as she swept all three gold medals, totaling 239kg.
Ramos did the same as Ando in the women’s 49kg category, lifting 90kg in snatch, 107kg in clean and jerk, and a total of 197kg.
Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen, a two-time women’s 45kg world champion, completed a hat trick of golds with a 200kg total.
Fernando Agad contributed to the Philippines’ medal haul as he snagged silver in the clean and jerk of the men’s 55kg class with 141kg and placed fourth overall with a 254kg total.
