Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in a memo to staff on Monday, June 30, that they are restructuring their artificial intelligence work to a new group called the Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Bloomberg, which first reported on the development, adds Meta Superintelligence Labs will, as its name implies, work on developing AI superintelligence, or an AI system capable of doing tasks as well as humans can, or better.
The new group will have former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang as chief AI officer, while former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman will partner with Wang to help lead the group, Bloomberg added.
Meta has gone big on the endeavor, offering hefty sums to prospective hires from other companies. Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, said Meta offered $100 million bonuses to OpenAI’s researchers to get them on board Meta’s train.
Meta’s memo also acknowledges 11 new AI-focused hires. The new hires are made up of former Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI employees.
Meanwhile, the memo — posted in full by CNBC — also said Meta is planning to “start research on our next generation of models to get to the frontier in the next year or so.” – Rappler.com
