MANILA, Philippines – Public school students in Makati City will soon enjoy free transportation to and from school through city-run buses.

Outgoing Mayor Abby Binay announced on Wednesday, May 28, that the city has acquired six new school buses as part of its efforts to support accessible education.

“With this new initiative, we are making it easier for students to get to school safely and on time so they can focus on learning,” she said.

The buses will operate on fixed routes with scheduled pick-up and drop-off points in key barangays and school zones. The service is exclusive to students enrolled in Makati’s public schools.

To board, students must present their school ID for safety and monitoring. Each bus will be equipped with a GPS tracking system to provide real-time updates and notifications to parents.

Each bus will be equipped with GPS tracking for real-time updates, and will be manned by a licensed driver and a trained transport aide for added safety.

One of Mayor Abby’s key promises was the Makati Subway Project, originally slated for completion by the end of her term in 2025. However, the project hit a major roadblock after the Supreme Court ruled that the Enlisted Men’s Barrios, which used to be part of Makati, fall under Taguig’s jurisdiction. The decision affected the final stations of the subway, putting the project on hold.

Term limited-mayor Abby will be succeeded as Makati city mayor by her sister, Senator Nancy Binay. Nancy defeated Abby’s husband, Makati District 2 Representative Luis Campos, in the mayoral race.

Nancy will be the fifth Binay to be elected as mayor of Makati. – Rappler.com
