A dazzling celestial display is set to unfold as the final supermoon of 2025 will light up this week.

According to NASA, the supermoon known as the Cold Moon will reach its peak on Dec 4 at 11.14pm UTC, which is 7.14am MYT on Dec 5.

The agency said the Moon’s orbital path was not a perfect circle, which meant its distance from Earth continually shifted.

Therefore, the Moon sometimes appeared a little closer and slightly larger, while at other times it moved farther away and looked smaller.

NASA said the "supermoon" is not an official astronomical term, but it is commonly used to refer to a full Moon that appears when the Moon is within at least 90 per cent of its closest point to Earth.

These occurrences took place only three to four times a year and always appeared consecutively.

A supermoon happened when a full Moon coincided with its nearest distance to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a point known as perigee.

At its closest approach, the full Moon could appear up to 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than the dimmest full Moon of the year, which occurred when it was furthest away.

Although the difference in size was subtle to the naked eye, the increased brightness was noticeably stronger compared to regular full Moons.

NASA said while the visual change might be modest, a supermoon still had measurable effects on Earth.

As the date approaches, the upcoming supermoon promises a captivating sight for anyone who glances upwards.
