DUNGUN – The Terengganu branch of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) is searching for a wild elephant believed to have been hit by a vehicle at Kilometre 160 (KM160) of Jalan Jerangau-Jabor, near Jabor Estate here, last night.
Its director, Dennis Ten Choon Yung, said five agency personnel were sent to the scene after receiving information about the incident to inspect the area and locate the elephant.
He said the elephant was believed to be an Asian elephant that had strayed from the nearby Bukit Bandi-Cerul Protected Forest, while its gender has yet to be determined.
"Monitoring and further inspection of the elephant will continue to locate and assess its current condition," he said in a statement today.
He said further inspection at the scene found traces of mud and food believed to be the elephant’s vomit near a Perodua Ativa involved in the accident.
He also said a wildlife crossing sign was located about four kilometres from the accident site.
"Drivers are advised to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits, especially when passing through areas where wildlife may cross," he added.
