SHAH ALAM - A calf was trapped in a drain for over 30 minutes while trying to avoid a vehicle before firefighters successfully rescued it in Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

Firefighter Mohd Supian Norharun, 43, recounted the incident, which took place on December 30 last year and involved six firefighters from the Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Station.

“The incident happened last year, but it only recently went viral.

"We received a report from the public at 7.15am. When we arrived, we saw a calf trapped in the drain, about the size of a teenage cow.

“It had strayed from its herd and while trying to avoid a car, it fell into the drain, fitting exactly within the narrow space.

“We used a special tool called webbing to lift it out, but the calf became startled and aggressive. We had to wait for it to calm down before proceeding to ensure the safety of our team,” he told Sinar.

Although the rescue operation took only 30 minutes, the narrow drain and the calf's position on its side made the process challenging.

Supian described that the team’s experience played a crucial role in calming the calf and preventing further agitation.

“As soon as we freed it, the calf ran off immediately. The rescue wasn’t too difficult, but the situation could have been dangerous.

“I also asked local residents about how it happened and who the owner was, but no one wanted to claim responsibility.

“These situations pose risks. Stray livestock can endanger people and cause damage. I urge owners to ensure their animals do not roam freely,” he said.

He stated that rescuing animals falls under the category of Special Service Operations.

Having served in the fire department for eight years, Supian shared that animal rescues are common. He recalled being involved in saving 15 cats trapped in a house fire in 2021.

“I am always grateful whenever I can save a life, even if it is not a human, because that is my duty,” he said.
