China Unveils High-Speed Quadruped Robot for Rough Terrain

The Lynx robot, which has all-terrain wheels, demonstrates remarkable abilities such as jumping, climbing, and even backflipping through rough terrain. Unlike its predecessors, the Lynx robot's design is inspired by quad bikes, allowing it to easily navigate diverse terrains.

In a recent video released by Deep Robotics, the Lynx robot is seen manoeuvring through woodland areas, conquering steep inclines of up to 50 degrees, overcoming obstacles such as rocks and low walls, and demonstrating its ability to transition from four-legged to two-legged positions with ease. The robot's versatility enables it to make sharp turns and perform dynamic movements at high speeds.

Deep Robotics, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Hangzhou, China, has emerged as a leading developer of quadrupedal robots, also known as "robot dogs," with a focus on industrial applications. The company's flagship product line, which includes models such as the X20 and X30, has found applications in a variety of fields, including security inspection, exploration, and public rescue operations.

A trial conducted in 2023 demonstrated the X20 model's effectiveness in conducting search and inspection missions in difficult terrains following earthquakes. The four-legged robots demonstrated their ability to rescue people and retrieve hazardous materials during simulated emergency search operations. These robots can operate autonomously or collaboratively to quickly cover specific areas, using advanced cameras and LiDAR technology for navigation.

Wei Tang, Deep Robotics' head of algorithm engineering, emphasised the importance of these robots in assisting emergency search and exploration teams, citing their ability to provide critical information efficiently, improving operational efficiency and safety. The robots' ability to streamline communication and improve functionality helps to achieve better results in critical situations.

The unveiling of the Lynx robot drew attention on platforms such as Reddit, where users expressed a mix of awe and apprehension about its capabilities. One user imagined the robot's potential for delivering aid to people in remote and inaccessible areas, while another saw similarities between the Lynx robot and iconic fictional characters from popular media.

Deep Robotics is strategically positioning itself as a key player in the robotics industry by showcasing its innovative humanoid robots at an industry expo in Beijing, similar to Elon Musk's Tesla Optimus.
