We tried 22 Christmas sandwiches – these are the best (and worst)

28/11/2024 11:00:00

It’s that time of year when the festive lunch offerings are out in full force on our high streets and in supermarket chiller cabinets. From sandwiches to toasties, paninis and wraps, there’s no shortage of options. Waitrose has reported a 533 per cent spike in searches for Christmas sandwiches over the past month alone. Pigs in – and under – blankets are making an appearance everywhere, though let’s be honest, it’s still not acceptable to eat them as the main event! And while a classic brie and cranberry combo is hard to beat if you’re going veggie, we’ve seen a lot of attempts at innovation in this category, very few of which actually deliver.

Note to all retailers: slapping a Christmas slogan on a sandwich doesn’t automatically make it festive – there actually needs to be some Christmas elements in the filling. Yes, Aldi, we’re talking about you and that sad-looking club. Meanwhile, the only thing jolly about Tesco’s Ho-Ho-Hog is the name. We tried 22 from the high street and rated them for nutrition and flavour.
