Nine Liverpool players heading for the Anfield exit

Liverpool’s elimination from the Champions League is confirmed and their slim hopes of defending their Premier League title could also officially end this weekend. They currently trail Arsenal by 18 points with six matches remaining.

It has been a season of intense disappointment and immense transition, but it is reasonable to expect more personnel changes at Anfield this summer. Telegraph Sport looks at the players destined to leave and those waiting at the departure gate.

Mohamed Salah

The great farewell tour is not turning out as planned. The sight of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia consoling the Egyptian as they walked to the centre circle after Paris St-Germain had scored their second goal at Anfield was a reminder of his status within the game. He has underperformed this season but his departure will leave a chasm.

Andy Robertson

If Tottenham remain in the Premier League, the Scotland captain would favour a move to them. He has been unnecessarily underused this season and letting a player depart, who could have such a positive influence in the dressing room, is a risk. Robertson is a great character, the kind who sets standards. He will not be easily replaced.

Curtis Jones

There are suitors for Jones. Why would there not be? He is an England international, vastly experienced, well-decorated with honours and at an excellent age with 12 months remaining on his contract. If he is not getting the game time – and starts – he craves, someone (perhaps Inter Milan) will make an offer that he cannot refuse.

Harvey Elliott

It has been a disappointing year for this young man. Aston Villa was supposed to be a move that enabled him to get minutes under his belt but it has turned into a calamity. It does not seem like his parent club are in a rush to get him back to Anfield and they will look to cash in during the summer window. He deserves to play regularly.

Federico Chiesa

It was not so long ago that you could not turn up at Anfield without hearing his name being sung. His cult-hero status was confirmed when he scored an important goal against Bournemouth on the opening weekend last August but he has struggled to get a look-in of late and it is hard to see a situation where he gets another 12 months on Merseyside.

Calvin Ramsay

For his own good, Ramsay needs a fresh start. He has had two starts this season but it is evident that Arne Slot does not see him as an option and said so bluntly in January. He arrived with promise from Aberdeen in 2022, for £4.2m, but his contract expires this summer and will not be renewed.

Rhys Williams

Amazing to think he played a role in the 2020-21 season and stepped into a breach alongside Nat Phillips, shoring up an injury-decimated defence and helping Liverpool qualify for the Champions League. His career never went in the direction it should have done, though, and he is out of contract in June.

Joe Gomez

Appeared to be on the brink of leaving last summer and how different things might have been had Liverpool not botched their bid to sign Marc Guéhi. Gomez had the chance to join Crystal Palace, Brighton and AC Milan. All clubs remain interested in him. Has been an excellent servant but now might be the right time to seek a new challenge.

Alexis Mac Allister

A surprise name, perhaps, but it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he could be used to finance the next phase of the rebuild. The Argentine has two years left on his contract, there have not been renewal talks yet and his form has dipped this season. Clubs in Europe are interested in him.
