TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brazil national team coach Carlo Ancelotti has explained his decision to recall Santos star Neymar, saying he believes the forward can still make a significant impact for the squad.

The Santos forward was among the final names announced by Ancelotti, bringing an end to weeks of speculation in Brazil’s media over his inclusion in the squad.

Ancelotti said Brazil’s all-time leading scorer still has the quality needed to help the Selecao at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

We chose Neymar not because we think he will be a good backup, but because he can add to the team with his qualities,” Ancelotti told a news conference in Rio de Janeiro, acoording to Xinhua.

Whether he plays one minute or 90 minutes... I think we have to focus on the quality of the minutes collectively on the pitch. He will play if he deserves to play. Training will decide that. I think it is important not to place all the expectations on one player,” added the former Real Madrid coach.

Neymar last appeared for the Brazil national football team on October 17, 2023, in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay national football team.

"We evaluated Neymar throughout the year. He is an important player and he will be important in this World Cup. He has the same role, obligation and responsibility as the other 25 players," added Ancelotti.

Since then, the former FC Barcelona player has not been included in Brazil’s squad due to persistent injury and fitness issues.

Neymar’s return is expected to provide a major boost for the Selecao, whose dressing room is currently seen as needing experienced senior leadership.

The 34-year-old forward is set to play in his fourth World Cup after previously appearing in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 tournaments.

Brazil are expected to face difficult opponents in the 2026 World Cup group stage, with matches against Morocco national football team, Haiti national football team, and Scotland national football team potentially posing major challenges.
