TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Google has revamped the Google Translate service by incorporating the AI-powered Gemini. This is done to improve the quality of translations, especially for phrases with nuanced meanings such as idioms, local expressions, and slang.

As quoted from GSM Arena, Google refers to this update as the "most advanced translation quality" now available in Google Search and the Translate app on iOS and Android. The update has started rolling out today in the United States and India.

At the initial stage, this feature supports translations between English and nearly 20 languages, including Spanish, Hindi, Mandarin, Japanese, and German.

In addition to the improved translation quality, Google also introduces a new beta experience that allows users to hear real-time translations through headphones. This feature is designed to preserve the tone, emphasis, and speech rhythm of each speaker to make the translations sound more natural and easy to follow.

To use this feature, users simply need to wear headphones, open the Translate app, and tap the "Live translate" feature.

The beta version of this live translation is starting to roll out in the Translate app on Android devices in the United States, Mexico, and India. Google mentions that more than 70 languages are supported, and this feature will be available in more regions and on iOS in 2026.

Google also updates the language learning feature in Translate by providing better feedback, in the form of tips based on users' speaking exercises. In addition, there is a feature to challenge oneself and achieve learning targets by tracking how many consecutive days the user has been learning.

The language learning feature is also expanded to nearly 20 new countries and regions, including Germany, India, Sweden, and Taiwan.
