TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk (TPIA), or Chandra Asri Group, has introduced Circlo, a product made from recycled plastic waste, specifically plastic bag scraps, as a mixture for asphalt.
Besides serving as a sustainable infrastructure mixture, Circlo has been developed as a recycling ecosystem that not only contributes to reducing the burden on final disposal sites (TPA), but also creates new economic opportunities from plastic waste. Currently, Circlo has been used in paving roads totaling 120.8 kilometers in several areas such as Jabodetabek, Cilegon, Garut, and Kudus.
Nicko Setyabudi, Circular Economy & Partnership Manager of Chandra Asri Group, revealed that Circlo's product does not only create economic impacts in the plastic recycling system, but also emphasizes solutions for managing plastic waste. "We see a great potential in transforming low-value waste into resources and strengthening the recycling ecosystem. By creating the demand for low-value plastic waste, it will increase collectivity that can provide environmental benefits and drive economic growth in the recycling industry," he said on June 10, 2025.
In addition to being a sustainable infrastructure mixture, Circlo has also been developed as a recycling ecosystem that not only contributes to reducing environmental burdens, but also opens up new economic opportunities from plastic waste. By promoting the principle of circularity, Circlo transforms low-value plastic waste into raw materials with higher economic value, while creating a sustainable value chain from upstream to downstream.
Furthermore, Circlo has fulfilled the required specifications for plastic asphalt mixture according to the Technical Guidelines for the Use of Plastic Asphalt Mixtures issued by the Ministry of Public Works.
Nicko claims that this recycling product is not only economically beneficial, but also meets the quality and safety standards for sustainable infrastructure applications.
Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Plastic Recycling Association (ADUPI), Justin Wiganda, stated that the plastic recycling industry plays a key role in reducing the volume of plastic waste ending up in landfills. "Amid increasing concerns about environmental pollution caused by plastic waste, the plastic recycling industry plays an important part in creating a circular economy and promoting the reuse of post-consumer plastic materials," said Justin.
Justin stated that the key to this program and the use of plastic waste is sorting. "It is important for the public to participate in waste sorting," Justin said.
It is hoped that Circlo can be one of the solutions that drives the formation of a strong and integrated supply chain. "This demonstrates that innovation and collaboration between players in the recycling industry, both upstream and downstream, are highly required as the key to the sustainability and strengthening of the plastic recycling industry, as well as the creation of a circular economy in plastic waste management in Indonesia," said Justin.
