Bibimbap Takes the Crown as Most Popular In-Flight Meal for Summer Flights
According to data from Jeju Air, bibimbap has overtaken bulgogi as the most reserved in-flight meal for July–August departures this year. As of late last month, multicolored bibimbap topped the pre-order rankings among passengers—both Korean and international.
Last summer, bulgogi rice bowl led sales with over 5,900 units sold (about 16% of total pre-orders), followed closely by bibimbap at 5,800 units. Other top contenders included Samwon Garden’s grilled short rib lunchbox and tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties).
This year, however, bibimbap has surged to No.1, with bulgogi and Samwon Garden’s galbijjim lunchbox trailing behind. Bibimbap, a colorful and well-balanced dish of rice, beef, egg, carrot, and greens like chives, has long been a fan favorite—both among Koreans and global travelers.
The most in-flight meals were sold on Jeju Air’s Incheon–Saipan route (6,100 meals), followed by Incheon–Bohol (5,600), and Incheon–Guam (3,400), indicating that vacation-bound family travelers tend to book meals in advance.
Jeju Air’s pre-order meals can be reserved up to 72 hours before departure via its website or app, though available options may vary by route.

At high altitudes, our senses of taste and smell are dulled—especially for sweet and salty flavors, which can drop by as much as 30% according to research. That’s why airlines often season in-flight meals more heavily. Dishes like bibimbap, which includes spicy gochujang (red chili paste), tend to hold up better in the air and offer bolder, more satisfying flavors.
Last year, bibimbap was also a top performer among Korea’s major low-cost carriers (LCCs), thanks to its balanced ingredients and kick of spice—making it the go-to comfort food above 30,000 feet.
