Japan’s Remake of ‘Marry My Husband’ Premieres to Strong Ratings and Buzz in Korea

A beloved Korean drama is back—but with a Japanese twist. The hit series ‘Marry My Husband’, which originally aired in Korea just a year ago, has returned to Korean screens in the form of a Japanese remake—and it’s already generating major buzz.

The Japanese version of ‘Marry My Husband’, which premiered on tvN Korea on July 6, kicked off with a metropolitan household rating of 1.419%, marking a promising start for the localized adaptation. From the very first episode, viewers were drawn in by the intense and emotionally charged plot, in which the protagonist Misa dies of illness—betrayed by both her husband and best friend.

🇯🇵 A Japanese Adaptation with a Korean Soul
Unlike a simple remake, this project is a full-scale adaptation of the original Korean web novel, reimagined to fit Japanese sensibilities. The story follows a woman who’s lived her life as a background character—only to be betrayed and killed by those closest to her. After mysteriously returning to the past 10 years earlier, she begins a thrilling revenge journey, determined to reclaim her life and rewrite her fate.

The J-drama stars Koshiba Fuka and Sato Takeru, two of Japan’s most popular actors—making it one of the most anticipated drama releases of the year.

The show is a collaboration between CJ ENM JAPAN, Korea’s Studio Dragon, Taiwan’s Freedom Pictures (best known for You Are the Apple of My Eye), and Japan’s legendary production company Shochiku, bringing together powerhouse teams from across Asia.

📺 Streaming Success and Global Response
The drama was first released globally on Amazon Prime Video on June 27, and immediately soared to #1 in Japan’s Prime Video content rankings. This success has also reignited interest in the original Korean version, which has reentered Japan’s Prime Video Top 10—a rare “reverse-viral” effect.

Reception has been overwhelmingly positive. On Filmarks, Japan’s largest content review platform, the show currently holds an impressive 4.1 out of 5 rating. On IMDb, it boasts a 9.2 out of 10—an indication of both critical and fan acclaim.

Japanese viewers have praised the drama for being “a creative adaptation, not just a copy,” and noted its “smooth localization,” “fast-paced storytelling,” and “strong performances from the lead actors.” Many are also congratulating the series for topping Prime Video so quickly.

🌍 Korean Viewers Are Loving It Too
Korean audiences are also taking notice. Reactions on social media include:

“I loved the Korean version, but the Japanese one adds new layers—it’s even more exciting.”

“I think the J-version is better, actually.”

“Watched episodes 1 & 2 live. Loving the cinematic, ‘J-drama’ style.”

“This story is just addictive, no matter the country.”

“Wow… can’t believe they remade this!”

“CJ ENM is behind it? Now I really want to compare both versions on TVING.”

According to Lee Sang-hwa, Executive Producer at CJ ENM’s Global Content Division, “The passionate performances from the actors, combined with K-drama storytelling elements, have resonated well with Japanese viewers. We’re committed to creating even more high-quality global content through future collaborations.”
