Besides lotus seeds, lotus heart, lotus root, etc., lotus leaves are one of the valuable medicinal ingredients for preventing and treating illnesses caused by hot weather, and have been used as medicine for a long time.

1. Benefits of lotus leaves

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, lotus leaves have a cooling nature and a spicy taste, benefiting the liver, spleen, and stomach meridians; they have the effect of clearing heat and relieving heatstroke, and are mainly used to treat diarrhea caused by dampness, dizziness, edema, hemoptysis, epistaxis, menorrhagia, bloody stools, and postpartum dizziness.

Traditional folk remedies use lotus leaves to cool the body, prevent and treat heatstroke and sunstroke, support the spleen and stomach, and treat abdominal pain and diarrhea caused by the hot and humid summer weather. Roasted lotus leaves are used to treat bleeding disorders.

Modern research shows that, clinically, lotus leaves are also used to prevent and treat obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, and cholecystitis. Elderly people with weakened bodies, hardened cerebral arteries, or those who have suffered hemiplegia due to stroke should regularly use lotus leaves.

2. Remedies made from lotus leaves

1. Cooling remedy: Steep 30g of dried lotus leaves in boiling water in a sealed container, drink as a tea substitute, continuously for 2-3 months.

2. Remedy for heatstroke: 10g of dried lotus leaves, 6g of honeysuckle flowers, decocted in water and drunk as tea throughout the day.

3. Ladder For digestion and weight loss: Steep 20g of dried lotus leaves and 15g of hawthorn berries in boiling water and drink as a tea throughout the day.

4. A decoction to clear the lungs, cool the lungs, and relieve headaches: 10g lotus leaves, 6g honeysuckle flowers, 6g watermelon rind, 6g loofah peel, 6g bamboo leaves; put into a pot, add enough water to cover, and simmer until only 2 bowls of liquid remain; divide into 2 doses and drink twice a day.

5. Tonic for replenishing Qi and blood, generating body fluids: 20g lotus leaves, 5g red dates; decoct and drink as a substitute for tea.

6. To lower blood pressure and improve sleep: 10g lotus leaves, 10g Tussilago farfara, 10g Cassia seed, 6g Codonopsis pilosula, 6g Gastrodia elata, 6g tangerine peel. Put into a pot, add enough water to cover, and simmer until only 2 bowls of liquid remain; divide into 2 doses and drink twice a day.

7. Tonic for the spleen , dispels stagnation, and reduces fatigue: 1 fresh lotus leaf, 60g of rice; wash the rice thoroughly and cook it into porridge as usual; wash the lotus leaf, and when the porridge is almost cooked, place the lotus leaf on top of the porridge; continue to cook over low heat for a while, until the porridge turns a light green color; add a little rock sugar, and divide into portions to eat throughout the day.
