A true car enthusiast has decided to shell out $242,000 (approximately over 6.3 billion VND) to bring a 1998 Toyota Supra Turbo to his garage.
Mecum's Kissimmee auction is one of the most spectacular events of the year, and 2026 will bring hundreds of legendary cars to the auction table. The auction has only just begun, but many records have already been set, including a 1998 Toyota Supra that sold for an unexpectedly high price, setting a new
world record.
We're talking about the fourth-generation Supra Turbo. The fourth-generation Supra was produced from 1993 to 2002, and this was the final version of the model for 17 years. In 2019, Toyota revived this
sports car using a BMW platform.
The fourth generation Supra was sold in the United States until 1998 with two versions of the legendary 3.0-liter 2JZ inline six-cylinder engine. Toyota offered a naturally aspirated version with 220 horsepower and 209 pound-feet (284 Nm) of torque, as well as a twin-turbocharged version capable of 320 horsepower and 315 pound-feet (427 Nm) of torque. The latter was clearly the more popular version.
As the final and most spectacular Supra before production ceased, this fourth-generation sports car became a collector's item just years after making history. By the late 2010s, the Turbo version was fetching prices in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, while the 2020s saw some units selling for over $150,000 (approximately 3.9 billion VND).
2021 was the year the first fourth-generation Supra sold for over $200,000. A year later, a low-mileage vehicle was auctioned off for a record-breaking $232,000 (approximately 6 billion VND, including fees).
Over three years have passed, and this record has been broken by a 1998 Toyota Supra Turbo that sold for over $10,000 more, reaching $242,000 (over 6.3 billion VND, including fees) (approximately $220,000 - over 5.7 billion VND after tax) at the Kissimmee auction in 2026.
The auction was very lively and exceeded the organizers' expectations. The pre-event estimated price for this car was between $115,000 and $130,000, so the final selling price was likely shocking to the seller. This is even more surprising given the current volatile market, where many highly sought-after classic cars remain unsold despite high bids that were still below the reserve price.
So what convinced the buyer to pay $242,000? It was because this Supra was not only in perfect, original condition, but also the final version for the US market, and had very low mileage. The odometer showed only 6,080 miles (9,785 km).
This car has been meticulously cared for since day one and rarely leaves the garage. And, as advertised, the targa roof has never been removed. The buyer of this Supra probably sat in it, eagerly anticipating this moment.
As of the time of writing, this white Supra is the most expensive fourth-generation model ever sold at auction, regardless of year of manufacture, provided it's a factory-original car; this excludes modified versions, as in 2021, the 1994 Supra from the "Fast & Furious" movie sold for $550,000, but that was a heavily modified vehicle.
