The 2026 Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 has become the only sporty version of the GLC luxury SUV line currently available, replacing both the GLC 43 and GLC 63.
Mercedes-AMG has finally done what many fans have been hoping for: fitting "more cylinders" under the hood of the high-performance GLC. This also means the Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 is saying goodbye to testing high-performance four-cylinder engines.
The 2026 Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 has become the only
sporty version of the GLC luxury SUV line currently available, replacing both the GLC 43 and GLC 63. Instead of a high-powered four-cylinder engine, the new GLC 53 uses a 3.0L turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine combined with mild hybrid technology.
The new engine delivers a maximum power of 443 horsepower and a peak torque of 600 Nm. The engine can boost torque to 640 Nm for short periods thanks to its overboost function. The electrical system can also provide additional thrust momentarily, resulting in smoother response and reduced lag.
This power allows the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds with Launch Control, while also delivering a much more exhilarating sound. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h or 270 km/h depending on the chosen option package.
Mercedes-AMG emphasizes that the focus of the new GLC 53 is on driving feel rather than specifications. The six-cylinder engine features a new exhaust system with special resonators, producing the crisp, deep rumble that comes to mind when seeing the AMG logo.
Power is transmitted through a 9-speed automatic transmission and a fully variable all-wheel drive system, which can shift all traction to the rear wheels when conditions permit. This is the first Mercedes-AMG SUV to feature an optional electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential. If equipped with the AMG Dynamic Plus package, the vehicle will have a drift mode, active engine mounts, and red brake calipers.
Rear-wheel steering, adaptive suspension, and large-calipers complete the list of technical features of this luxury model. The car will be available in two body styles: a traditional SUV with a boxy rear end and a coupe with a sloping roofline.
The price of the 2026 Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be between its predecessors, the GLC 43 and GLC 63, meaning around £100,000 in the UK or $85,000 in the US. This price will be higher if the Golden Accents Package is chosen, featuring gold-colored cross-spoke wheels and a prominent AMG logo.
German media reports indicate that Mercedes-AMG is preparing to bring back the GLC 63 with a refined version of the flat-crank V8 engine from the S-Class.
According to Autocar magazine, the new Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 will achieve a maximum power output of over 650 horsepower and a peak torque of 800 Nm. The company also recently revealed that this powertrain will be used on the limited-edition Mythos CLE model.
