Atletico Madrid delivered one of their most convincing performances of the season so far, annihilating Real Betis 5-0 in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. From the very first minutes, Diego Simeone's team dominated the game with their aggressive pressing and high-speed style of play.
The turning point came early in the 12th minute, when center-back David Hancko joined the attack and finished accurately, opening the floodgates for a goalscoring spree at De La Cartuja.
With the advantage of a goal lead, Atletico played even better. In the 30th minute, Giuliano Simeone – son of coach Diego Simeone – capitalized on an opportunity to double the lead, creating a memorable moment for the Simeone family.
Less than 10 minutes later, Ademola Lookman added his name to the scoresheet with a cool finish in the 37th minute, bringing to a close a nightmare first half for Betis.
In the second half, the one-sided game continued. Antoine Griezmann increased the lead to 4-0 in the 62nd minute, before Thiago Almada sealed the 5-0 victory in the 83rd minute.
This resounding victory not only secured Atletico's place in the semi-finals but also sent a strong warning to all their opponents in this season's Copa del Rey.
