This kind of bloating is no small matter.

Bloating is often overlooked as it could be due to overeating or excess acid, and can be relieved simply by taking antacids.

However, when your stomach feels bloated almost every day, your clothes feel tighter in the evenings, or you feel full after only a few bites, something might be wrong. Your gut speaks in subtle ways, and frequent bloating can be one of the biggest warning signs.

Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, an internist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital (India), says: Frequent bloating is often seen as an acid problem, but in reality, it's a warning sign of several underlying issues in the gut or metabolism. Irritable bowel syndrome, food intolerances, changes in bowel motility, hormonal imbalances, or thyroid problems all have bloating as a primary symptom.

Bloating could very well be a sign of cancer

Bloating caused by ovarian cancer often feels unusual:

  • It lasts for weeks or longer.
  • It makes the stomach look big or hard.
  • It causes a persistent feeling of fullness or bloating in the stomach.

Along with other problems such as pain, nausea, or loss of appetite, in some cases, ovarian cancer can also cause unexpected weight gain, often due to fluid buildup in the abdomen. This can make the abdomen look swollen or distended, even if weight hasn't changed significantly.

If you frequently experience bloating even after eating a normal meal, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

When should I see a doctor?

Many people occasionally experience bloating after parties or carbonated drinks. The problem only becomes concerning when this symptom occurs almost daily or lasts for weeks, according to the Times of India.

Dr. Chatterjee explains that signs to watch out for include: symptoms that occur daily, worsen after eating, or are accompanied by abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, feeling full quickly, fatigue, weight loss, or fever.

Chatterjee warns: If bloating lasts longer than 2-3 weeks or affects daily activities, don't ignore it. See a doctor to find the root cause of the problem and treat the symptoms effectively.

Experts at Cleveland Clinic (USA) also advise: See a doctor if bloating lasts longer than 3 weeks, occurs frequently (more than 12 times a month), or causes severe pain.
