Lexus has just refreshed the current IS model with a facelift featuring a sharper design, refined interior, and improved chassis to maintain the appeal of the compact luxury sedan. According to several sources from Japan, the luxury car manufacturer owned by Toyota is quietly preparing for a major turning point, as the next generation of the Lexus IS may become a fully electric model.

Expected to launch in 2027, the new Lexus IS is said to completely abandon internal combustion engines in favor of a purely electric platform. This is a different direction from Toyota's "multi-route" strategy, where gasoline, hybrid, and purely electric vehicles coexist. However, in the premium segment, Lexus seems ready to move faster in its electrification journey.

The idea of a zero-emission IS was first hinted at by Lexus in 2021 through the Electrified Sedan concept, before being further concretized with the LF-ZC concept in 2023. These prototypes showcased an optimized aerodynamic design, the application of gigacasting manufacturing technology, and the use of high-performance prismatic batteries.

According to Best Car magazine (Japan), the new generation Lexus IS will be positioned to compete directly with the trio of luxury electric sedans from Germany: the BMW i3 Neue Klasse, Audi A4 e-tron, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class EQ – all expected to launch around 2027. If the roadmap goes as planned, Lexus will enter the race at the same time that its German rivals unveil their new products.

The all-electric IS model is expected to inherit many design elements from the LF-ZC concept, with a low, aerodynamic stance rather than the traditional three-compartment sedan structure. Its expected length is around 4,790 mm, smaller than the new generation Lexus ES, which has expanded to 5,140 mm.

In the standard version, the car may use a single electric motor to drive the rear wheels, while the premium version features two AWD motors with power approaching 500 horsepower. Lexus is also expected to adopt a steer-by-wire system and a chassis refined according to the "Lexus Driving Signature" philosophy, in order to maintain the brand's characteristic driving feel in the era of electrification.

Most notably, the new Lexus IS is likely to utilize solid-state battery technology – an area where Toyota is heavily investing. If commercialized on schedule, the driving range could exceed 1,000 km per charge, creating a significant advantage in the luxury electric sedan segment and blurring the lines between EVs and hybrids.

With a rumored launch date in late 2027, the next-generation Lexus IS has likely entered an advanced development phase. In the context of an increasingly fierce electric vehicle race, the decision to completely shift to pure electric power could mark an ambitious new chapter for Lexus in the global luxury sedan segment.
