Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the paranasal sinuses, causing unpleasant symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, headache, facial pressure, cough, fever, bad breath, fatigue, etc., and can lead to dangerous complications. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, sinusitis is often described under the terms "Nasal sinusitis" and "Brain sinusitis." According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are many causes of sinusitis:

  • Due to invasion by wind-heat and wind-cold: When the defensive qi is weakened, agents such as wind-cold and wind-heat take advantage of the opportunity to invade the nose and sinuses through the respiratory tract.
  • Due to obstructed lung qi: The stagnation of qi creates conditions for the accumulation of pathogenic factors, which over time transform into heat, burning body fluids into thick pus and causing blockage of the sinuses.
  • Lung qi deficiency: The nose and sinuses are not nourished or protected, creating conditions for wind-cold to invade.
  • Low heat in the spleen and stomach: Irregular eating habits and excessive worry damage the spleen and stomach, causing spleen deficiency that affects digestive function. Accumulated phlegm and dampness transform into heat, rising to the nose and causing sinusitis.
  • Liver and gallbladder stagnation of heat: Toxic heat rises along the meridians to the nose, causing pain in the forehead and cheeks.
  • Kidney deficiency: The kidneys are the root of vital energy (qi), and kidney deficiency weakens the body's ability to fight off diseases, leading to persistent and long-lasting sinusitis.

Sinusitis causes many unpleasant symptoms and affects the quality of life of patients.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, betel leaves act as a remedy to "clear" inflamed sinuses through the following effects:

  • Dispelling cold and warming the body: Sinusitis often worsens when exposed to cold. With its spicy taste and warming properties, betel leaves help warm the nasal and throat area, dispelling cold pathogens residing in the sinuses and restoring blood circulation in the area.
  • Reducing gas and inflammation: The spicy taste of betel leaves has a downward and dispersing effect, helping to relieve stagnant gas and dissolve accumulated mucus in the sinuses.
  • Clearing nasal passages: Piper betel leaves help to clear the nasal passages and reduce nasal congestion by regulating the flow of lung energy to the nose and sinuses.

In addition, modern medicine also explains the effectiveness of betel leaves through chemical compounds that directly affect the inflammatory process in the sinus mucosa:

  • Antibacterial and germicidal effects: Active compounds such as piperine and alkaloids in betel leaves act as natural antibiotics, inhibiting the growth of common bacteria in the sinuses, controlling infection, changing nasal discharge from green/yellow pus to clear fluid, and reducing foul odor.
  • Anti-inflammatory and anti-edema effects: β-caryophyllene and flavonoids in betel leaves can inhibit enzymes that cause inflammation. When the sinus mucosa is less inflamed, the edema will decrease, the sinus openings will naturally widen, helping to drain pus more easily, thereby reducing pressure in the sinuses and relieving headaches.
  • Mucus-thinning effect: The essential oils in betel leaves help to thin the structure of thick, viscous mucus. When the mucus is thinner, the cilia in the sinuses can more easily sweep it out, helping to keep the sinuses clean and clear.

2. How to use betel leaves to help treat sinusitis

2.1 Add a few drops of betel leaf juice.

Ingredients: Fresh, mature betel leaves, saline solution.

How to do it:

  • Wash the betel leaves thoroughly, soak them in diluted salt water to completely disinfect them, then let them drain.
  • Crush the betel leaves and squeeze out the pure juice.
  • Dilute this extract with saline solution at a 1:1 ratio to avoid burning the nasal mucosa.
  • Use a cotton swab to apply this solution inside the nose, or use a clean nasal dropper bottle to put 1-2 drops in each nostril.
  • Wait for about 2-3 minutes, then gently blow your nose to expel the mucus.

2.2 Brewing betel leaves into a tea

Ingredients: 20-30g of fresh Piper betel leaves or 10-15g of dried Piper betel leaves.

How to do it:

  • Wash the betel leaves thoroughly and chop them finely.
  • Place the ingredients in a pot with 2 bowls of water and boil until only about 1/2 bowl remains.
  • Divide the decoction into two portions and drink both within the day after meals.
  • It's best to drink it while the water is still warm to maximize its cooling effect.

2.3 Steaming with betel leaves

Ingredients: 1 handful of fresh betel leaves, clean water, coarse salt.

How to do it:

  • Wash the betel leaves thoroughly, then gently crush them slightly to release the essential oils.
  • Put the betel leaves in a pot with 1 liter of water and bring to a boil. Once the water boils, reduce the heat and simmer for about 5-10 minutes.
  • Pour the water into a small basin or leave it in the pot.
  • Cover your head and the pot of water with a large towel, then bring your nose close to the rising steam and take deep breaths.
  • Steam your face for about 10-15 minutes until the water cools down, once a day before going to bed.

Steaming with betel leaves helps relieve nasal congestion and blockage caused by sinusitis.

3. Notes on using betel leaves to treat sinusitis

Wash the betel leaves thoroughly and soak them in diluted salt water before use (especially when using them as nasal drops) to avoid further infection.

Do not use undiluted betel leaf juice as its pungent taste can cause burning and irritation to the nasal mucosa; it should be diluted with saline solution. Only use 1-2 times a day to avoid irritating or drying out the nasal mucosa. If you experience severe pain, swelling, or an allergic reaction, stop immediately and rinse your nose with saline solution.

Do not use betel leaves for people with mouth ulcers or severe constipation; breastfeeding women should use caution as betel leaves may reduce milk production.

Piper betel leaves are most effective for mild or newly developed sinusitis caused by cold. If there is persistent thick pus in the sinuses or a high fever, consult a doctor before using them.
