With nearly 4,400 recorded species of plants and animals, Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park (Quang Tri) continues to affirm its outstanding global biodiversity value.

On February 25th, the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board (Quang Tri province) announced that in 2025, research and conservation efforts in the National Park will continue to make remarkable strides, with thousands of plant and animal species recorded and many new discoveries for science .
According to the National Park Management Board, Phong Nha - Ke Bang has so far recorded 1,404 animal species, belonging to 842 genera, 294 families, 68 orders, 12 classes, and 4 phyla. Of these, 83 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book; 110 species are on the IUCN Red List; 66 species are on the CITES appendices; and 35 and 118 species are protected under Government Decrees 64/2019/ND-CP and 84/2021/ND-CP, respectively.
The flora also shows exceptional richness with 2,956 species, belonging to 1,008 genera, 198 families, 63 orders, 12 classes, and 6 phyla. Of these, 111 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book; 119 species in the IUCN Red Book; and 3 and 46 species are respectively included in the two aforementioned protection decrees.
Notably, Phong Nha - Ke Bang has so far recorded and published 53 new species for science, including 46 animal species and 7 plant species.
In 2025 alone, scientists will continue to discover and publish information about two new species: the Son Doong cone snail and the Phong Nha - Ke Bang white-headed snail.
These figures highlight the outstanding biodiversity value of the Phong Nha - Ke Bang World Natural Heritage site, and affirm the important role of this area in wildlife research, conservation, and rescue in Vietnam.
