Mohamed Salah shone at the crucial moment with the decisive goal in injury time of extra time, leading Egypt to victory over Benin after a thrilling 120 minutes in the CAN Cup.
The clash between Egypt and Benin was tense, befitting a knockout match. Both teams started cautiously, prioritizing defensive solidity, resulting in a goalless first half despite Egypt having more possession.
The turning point came in the second half. In the 69th minute, Marwan Attia unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area, the ball traveling with force and precision to open the scoring for Egypt.
Just when it seemed that the slender advantage would be enough for "The Pharaohs" to close out the match, unexpected drama unfolded. In the 83rd minute, from a cross from the right wing, the ball deflected off defender Aboul Fotouh's foot, changing direction and catching goalkeeper El Shenawy off guard, allowing Dossou to score the equalizer for Benin.
The two teams were forced into extra time in a closely contested match. Egypt increased the pressure and made the difference from a set piece, when Ibrahim rose high to head the ball past goalkeeper Dandjinou. However, Benin fought back until the very last seconds.
Right in the final minute of extra time, Mohamed Salah made his mark. The Liverpool star sprinted forward, showed exquisite skill, and finished with the outside of his left foot from outside the penalty area, sealing a 3-1 victory. This was also Salah's 10th goal in AFCON finals.
The nail-biting victory secured Egypt's place in the quarter-finals, where they will face either Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso, while Benin missed the chance to repeat their 2019 achievement.
