Microsoft's financial report accidentally revealed OpenAI's true financial picture: a quarterly loss of up to 12 billion USD, putting Sam Altman in the eye of a storm of pressure.
OpenAI just posted a massive $12 billion loss in the quarter, according to data from Microsoft's latest financial report.
This figure shocked investors, as it was considered one of the biggest quarterly losses in the history of the private technology industry.
While OpenAI's revenue grew rapidly, R&D, operating costs, and employee equity payments eroded all profits.
About 20% of the company's revenue still goes to Microsoft, leaving it with less than $0.80 in actual cash flow for every dollar earned.
Microsoft is also the only “shield” that provides GPU infrastructure, super servers and computing power to OpenAI, helping the company maintain operations.
Faced with growing financial pressure, CEO Sam Altman announced a restructuring of OpenAI into a traditional for-profit company.
The new structure includes the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation and the for-profit OpenAI Group PBC (Public Benefit Corporation), to increase its ability to raise capital and expand globally.
However, the question remains: can OpenAI maintain its mission of “AI for humanity” while also surviving the impending financial storm?
