Although measuring blood pressure is quite simple, a few mistakes can skew the results, and many people often make these errors.

According to the Hindustan Times, Dr. Pramod Tripathi, currently working in India, recently pointed out 10 mistakes to avoid when measuring blood pressure in order to get accurate results in a social media post.

10 mistakes to avoid when measuring blood pressure

  • To keep your feet suspended in the air: Your feet must be placed on the ground.
  • Crossing your legs: This action can artificially increase blood pressure readings.
  • To ensure your bladder is full: You should urinate before measuring your blood pressure.
  • Trying to keep your back too straight and stiff: Keep your back in a relaxed and comfortable position.
  • Measure through clothing: If wearing a long-sleeved shirt, it's best to roll up the sleeves so the cuff is in direct contact with your skin.
  • Incorrect tubing orientation (for mechanical devices): The tube connecting to the pump must be facing inwards towards the body.
  • Incorrect arm placement: The arm being measured must be placed on a support at heart level, neither higher nor lower.
  • Talking while taking a measurement: It's necessary to sit quietly for a few minutes before and during the measurement to get accurate results.
  • Consuming tea and coffee: These beverages should be consumed at least half an hour before the test.
  • Measure when stressed or immediately after exercise: It's important to be completely relaxed.

According to the Hindustan Times, Doctor Tripathi advises: Measure your blood pressure twice, 5 minutes apart, and then take the average.

Dr. Tripathi further explained that if the upper number exceeds 130 or 140, it may indicate that the arteries are gradually hardening due to age. If the lower number is high, it means that smaller arteries are constricting due to excess insulin or nervous stress.

The importance of blood pressure readings

Ideal blood pressure in healthy adults is typically below 120/80 mm Hg.

High blood pressure (hypertension): This is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Extremely high levels can lead to life-threatening emergencies.

Low blood pressure (hypotension): Causes dizziness and fainting. If it's too low, it restricts blood flow to vital organs, leading to shock.
