Illuminated by countless silk lanterns and rows of wooden-framed townhouses, Hoi An is a jewel of Vietnam's central coast. However, this historic city also has a modern side, where abstract artists and chic bars light up its streets.

"Ultimately, this is the most beautiful place in Vietnam. The UNESCO-recognized Old Quarter is a stunning tapestry of diverse influences. An ancient Japanese-built bridge spans the canal, while cobblestone streets are adorned with shops featuring antique-style railings. Many buildings are decorated with bougainvillea and painted in a lemon-yellow hue, which gradually turns into a golden yellow as the sun sets over the Thu Bon River each day. As night falls, the magical darkness is dotted with millions of tiny lights, like fireflies in a forest. These paper lanterns, a symbol of the Old Quarter for 400 years, are still handcrafted in quaint workshops. Visitors also flock to the city's tailor shops, famous since the 16th century, when the finest fabrics were transported through Hoi An – then known as Faifo – thanks to its location on the Maritime Silk Road," wrote the American magazine National Geographic .

However, Hoi An is not simply a repository of traditional crafts, nor a postcard picture frozen in time – it is a vibrant metropolis. A thriving modern art scene unfolds in its small galleries and studios, while its street food boasts some of the best banh mi in Vietnam. These French-influenced baguettes, filled with pâté, roasted pork, and pickled vegetables, are perfect for snacking while exploring the assembly halls and French colonial-era townhouses of the old quarter. Quiet during the day, the area comes alive after nightfall, centered around An Hoi Island on the river, where its bustling night market takes place.

The beauty of Hoi An isn't limited to the historical center. While you're here, don't forget to visit Cam Chau, a peaceful residential area nestled among rice paddies and coconut groves along the river. You can explore the tranquil waters in a basket boat – a traditional round-bottomed boat made of woven bamboo. Further afield is An Bang Beach, a stunning stretch of fine white sand. The sea here is ideal for kayaking and snorkeling.

In short, however beautiful it may be, Hoi An's allure lies in its outward appearance. Its name means "peaceful meeting place," a title this ancient port city has held for centuries, serving as a center of trade and intellectual exchange, as well as a haven of elegance and tranquility.
