In the early hours of April 23rd, Man City beat Burnley 1-0 in round 34 to take the top spot in the Premier League from Arsenal.

Manchester City reclaimed the top spot in the Premier League table for the first time since August 2025. Pep Guardiola's team have the same 70 points and 37 goal difference as Arsenal, but are ahead due to a higher goal difference (66 compared to 63).
The match began with suffocating pressure from the reigning champions. In the 5th minute, Jeremy Doku provided a sublime assist for Erling Haaland, who broke free. Facing the goalkeeper, the Norwegian striker didn't miss, scoring with a superb finish to beat Martin Dubravka and open the scoring for Man City.
Having taken an early lead, Pep Guardiola's team continued to press in an attempt to improve their goal difference, a crucial factor in the two-horse race with Arsenal.
However, it was an outstanding performance from Dubravka as he repeatedly denied attempts from Nico O'Reilly, Bernardo Silva, and Rayan Cherki. Man City even had a scare when Burnley mounted a strong comeback, but Zian Flemming's inaccuracy and Abdukodir Khusanov's decisive tackle helped the visitors hold firm.
Pep seemed unhappy that Man City only won by a narrow margin.
In the second half, manager Pep Guardiola clearly showed his displeasure on the touchline as his players lacked energy and missed many opportunities, most notably Haaland's shot hitting the post. Although they couldn't score another goal to create a more emphatic result, the three points were more than enough for Man City to gain an advantage going into the final rounds of the season.
In stark contrast to the visitors' joy, Burnley concluded a disastrous season, winning only 1 of their last 25 matches and officially being relegated.
