In the early hours of April 23rd, a 0-1 defeat against Man City left Burnley with no hope of remaining in the Premier League next season.

Burnley were relegated after a terrible run of form.

After 34 matches played, the club at Turf Moor only had 20 points, 13 points behind West Ham, who were in a safe position. Burnley became the next team, after Wolverhampton, to be relegated to the Championship after just one season in the top flight.

This is Burnley's second relegation in just the last three seasons. Prior to this, the club had enjoyed six consecutive seasons in the top flight of English football, from 2016 to 2022.

In total, Burnley have been relegated five times, second only to Norwich City's dismal record. Return to the Championship seemed inevitable for Scott Parker's side after a disastrous season, winning only one of their last 25 matches. This defeat also extended their winless streak at Turf Moor to 13 games.

In the decisive match, Erling Haaland needed only 5 minutes to extinguish the home team's hopes with the opening goal, simultaneously propelling Man City to the top of the table. Despite Burnley's efforts to find an equalizer and delay their departure, their strikers' lack of clinical finishing in front of Gianluigi Donnarumma's goal meant they had to accept the harsh reality.

The final relegation spot is now up for grabs for Tottenham, creating a dramatic ending to the bottom of this year's league table.

Of the three Championship teams promoted to the Premier League last season, only Leeds are relatively safe. "The Whites" have 40 points, a milestone considered sufficient for most teams to avoid relegation.
