Information published in the latest Industrial Property Gazette shows that the registered design image matches the BYD Sealion 05 from the Ocean Series. While design registration doesn't necessarily mean the model will be sold in Vietnam immediately, it's often an important preparatory step before a product officially enters the market.
To date, BYD Vietnam has not confirmed its plans to distribute the Sealion 05. However, given the company's continuous expansion of its product portfolio in many Southeast Asian countries, the appearance of this SUV in Vietnam is considered entirely feasible.
In China , the BYD Sealion 05 is positioned in the C-segment SUV market with a starting price of 97,900 Yuan, equivalent to approximately 380 million VND. The model is developed in two directions: a purely electric (EV) version and a plug-in hybrid (DM-i) version, thus meeting various usage needs.
The Sealion 05 measures 4,620 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,630 mm in height, comparable to many familiar C-segment SUVs such as the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, or Mazda CX-5. If brought to Vietnam, this model would join one of the most competitive segments in the market.
The exterior design is distinctly modern electric vehicle-inspired, featuring a closed front end, slim LED headlights, and semi-recessed door handles to improve aerodynamics. Despite using two different powertrains, both the EV and DM-i versions share almost the entire design language.
The interior is designed in a minimalist style. The car uses an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, combined with a 12.8-inch central infotainment screen on the standard version or a 15.6-inch screen on higher-end versions. The gear shifter has been moved behind the steering wheel, leaving more space in the center console for storage compartments.
The two variants also differ in luggage capacity. The DM-i hybrid has a 650-liter rear trunk, while the all-electric version has a 600-liter trunk but adds an extra 110-liter front storage compartment for charging cables or personal items.
In its DM-i version, the Sealion 05 uses a 1.5L naturally aspirated gasoline engine producing 99 horsepower, combined with a 161-horsepower electric motor. The vehicle offers two battery options, providing an all-electric range of 220 to 305 km according to CLTC standards, and is equipped with a 65-liter fuel tank for longer journeys.
Meanwhile, the all-electric version is offered in two configurations. The standard version uses a 268-horsepower electric motor and a 57 kWh LFP battery, providing a range of 540 km. The higher-powered version increases the power to 322 horsepower, combined with a 68 kWh battery, and can travel up to 630 km on a single charge according to CLTC standards.
In addition to its electrified powertrain, the Sealion 05 is also equipped with a comprehensive safety system by BYD, featuring 7 airbags and the DiPilot 100 driver assistance system on all versions. Customers can also opt for the DiPilot 300 package, which offers more advanced driver assistance features for both city and highway driving.
If officially launched in the Vietnamese market, the BYD Sealion 05 will expand the brand's SUV product range and create more options in the C-segment crossover category by combining both plug-in hybrid and all-electric configurations in a single model.
