A three-match winless streak has seen Real Madrid lose almost all of their advantage in La Liga.
Real Madrid are staggering.
Real Madrid are entering their most difficult period of the season. Just three weeks ago, they were five points clear of Barcelona after a 4-0 win over Valencia. But last night's 2-2 draw at Elche, combined with Barca's win over Athletic Bilbao, means Real are now just one point clear at the top. What was once a huge advantage has now become a real concern.
The decline was not limited to La Liga. The poor run of results began in the Champions League, when Real lost 1-0 to Liverpool at Anfield. That was a match that showed the gap between the two teams, even though the score was only minimal.
After the stumble in England, Real drew with Rayo Vallecano in a game that was out of control and then continued to be dominated by Elche for most of the time. The underdog team took the lead twice and played with such confidence that Real were confused even when they had possession of the ball.
Xabi Alonso experimented with a three-man midfield to add solidity and support to the build-up play. However, this system left the club unbalanced on the flanks and did not improve their pressing.
Elche exploited gaps too easily, while Real's defense was constantly caught off guard. Jude Bellingham's equalizer only saved the team from defeat, but could not cover up the disjointed play.
Real Madrid are entering the most difficult period since the beginning of the season.
In attack, Real lacked speed and innovation. Xabi benched Vinicius for tactical reasons, but the change was ineffective. Brahim and Rodrygo tried hard but lacked cohesion, while the midfield was slow in transition. Mistimed passes prevented Real from dominating the game as usual.
Despite still leading La Liga and being among the top eight teams in the Champions League, Real Madrid are clearly losing the solidity that made their impressive start to the season possible. The gap with Barcelona has narrowed, and their competitive mentality is also under great pressure.
Ahead is a tumultuous trip to Karaiskakis, where Olympiacos are renowned for their frenetic atmosphere. If they don’t adjust quickly, Real Madrid could fall off the top spot this week. Xabi Alonso still has time, but the room for error is getting smaller with each game.
