Notably, this project marks the return to the small screen for actor Nam Joo-hyuk after a three-year hiatus to fulfill his mandatory military service. At a press conference at the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul Hotel, the actor shared that he received the offer to participate in the project while serving in the military. The military environment stimulated his imagination, sparking his curiosity about how the spiritual world could be portrayed, and fueling his determination to fully immerse himself in the complex role of Gu-cheon.

The collaboration between director Choi Jung-gyu (famous for "The Devil Judge") and the talented screenwriters Kwon So-ra and Seo Jea-won (who created the successful "The Guest" and "Bulgasal: Immortal Souls") provides a strong guarantee of the film's quality. Following the resounding success of the film "Exhuma" (2024), the spiritual and exorcism genre, deeply rooted in Korean culture, is receiving significant attention from international audiences.
Director Choi Jung-gyu stated that, although the film explores supernatural entities such as "demons" (ghosts and monsters) or "vengeful spirits" (vengeful ghosts) from folklore, the team skillfully designed them to be visually appealing and accessible to a global audience. Besides the fast-paced and intense narrative, the director also emphasized the beauty of traditional palace costumes and architecture in every frame.
To differentiate between the real world and the spiritual realm, the filmmakers limited the overuse of computer special effects. Instead, they challenged the limits of staging by filming the same setting in completely different seasons, constructing separate sets, and using a contrasting color palette as a visual tool to help viewers easily connect with the subject.
The film also marks a significant career shift for young actress Roh Yoon-seo in her first leading role in a historical fantasy drama, alongside the emotionally conflicted performance of veteran actor Cho Seung-woo as a lonely king witnessing his cursed dynasty. "The East Palace" will officially premiere on Netflix on July 17th.
