Actor Kim Seon-ho has opened up about his on-screen chemistry with Go Youn-jung, admitting that working alongside her on Netflix’s romantic comedy series ‘Can This Love Be Translated?’ made him feel genuinely nervous at times.
In an interview held on January 22 at a café in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, Kim reflected on his experience filming the Netflix original, which premiered earlier this month and has quickly gained global attention.
From Awkward Beginnings to Natural Chemistry
Kim recalled that his relationship with Go Youn-jung evolved naturally over the course of the international shoot. “We were a bit awkward in Japan at first,” he said. “But while filming in Canada, we really grew close.” He shared a small but telling memory from the set. “When I couldn’t sleep because of jet lag and looked completely exhausted, she would quietly hand me jelly snacks. That’s how we started getting comfortable with each other,” he explained with a smile.
By the time filming moved to Italy, the two had become close enough to joke and tease one another freely. Kim added that this warmth extended beyond the cast.
“The entire set felt like a family. I was close with not just Youn-jung, but the staff as well. When filming ended, it felt strangely emotional.”
Praising Go Youn-jung’s Work Ethic and Instincts
Kim spoke highly of Go Youn-jung’s attitude and adaptability as an actress, noting that her professionalism left a strong impression on him. “I honestly wondered how someone her age could absorb direction and improve so quickly,” he said. “She’s incredibly flexible and learns fast. Even if I accidentally gave a slightly different line, she would immediately catch it and adjust the rhythm.” He revealed that one of the café scenes shot in Canada captured this kind of spontaneous exchange. “That scene includes moments that came from that kind of improvisation. Watching her respond in real time was genuinely moving.”
“Yes, I Was Nervous”
When asked directly whether he ever felt nervous acting opposite Go Youn-jung, Kim laughed before answering without hesitation. “Of course,” he said. “Everyone on set would agree she has this naturally lovely presence.” He continued, “She communicates easily with directors and staff, and that kind of openness makes people instantly like her. I felt nervous the moment I saw her. I won’t deny that.”
Love on Screen, Caution in Real Life
In the series, Kim plays Joo Ho-jin, a multilingual interpreter who is skilled in languages but clumsy when it comes to love. Asked how similar this is to his real-life dating style, Kim offered a candid response.
“If our interests don’t align, it’s hard for me to even start a relationship,” he said. “Conversation matters a lot to me. As I’ve gotten older, that’s become even more important.” He added that he tends to take a long time before developing romantic feelings. “I’ve always been cautious maybe even a bit timid. I need time.”
