Up front, the Sealion 7’s face closely mirrors the Seal Performance sedan — same swept headlights, similar fascia. But it’s the profile that makes the strongest statement. Like the Porsche Macan EV or the Tesla Model Y, the Sealion 7 adopts a sloping roofline that gives it a fastback silhouette. Add flush retractable door handles, 20-inch diamond-cut alloys, and serious braking hardware, and this is unmistakably a performance SUV that is built to be practical and fun.

Inside, the Sealion 7 feels premium and solid — panel gaps are tight, materials hold up to scrutiny, and the doors close with the satisfying thud of something built well. A 10.25-inch instrument cluster handles driver information clearly, though customization options are more limited than on other BYD models, sadly. The 15.6-inch rotating central touchscreen handles climate, ADAS, and infotainment, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available when the screen is in its standard horizontal orientation. That said, tactile buttons for climate control is and always will be king, which is not found here.

There are other practical touches here, such as ventilated seats for the hot Philippine climate, a heads-up display, a 12-speaker Dynaudio audio system (a step up in sound quality from the Sealion 6 and Tang DMi), NFC card entry, and two-stage regenerative braking adjustment. The wireless charger is ventilated to prevent the phone from overheating. The only miss: nowhere obvious to stow a pair of sunglasses, but there are a ton of cubbyholes anyway.

The numbers are pretty substantial with 530 PS and 690 Nm from dual motors, fed by an 82 kWh battery with 542 km of WLTP range. BYD quotes a 0–100 km/h time of a scant 4.5 seconds; the car’s own onboard timer logged 4.2 seconds in testing, which may reflect enthusiastic calibration, but the sensation of acceleration is very real regardless. As a matter of fact, others were able to get 4 seconds in the onboard timer.

On the closed-course test loop with imperfect cement rather than smooth asphalt, the Sealion 7 impressed. Ride quality is well-damped over rough surfaces. The steering ratio is notably quick, catching drivers used to more languid responses off guard. In the slalom, the car exhibited genuine rotation, showcasing a willingness to play that typical family SUVs simply don’t offer. With the battery floor lowered, the center of gravity is lower, and cornering composure is better than the Sealion 7’s roofline would suggest.

The Sealion 7 is the Seal Performance for people who need an SUV — and it barely feels like a compromise. It’s fast, well-built, surprisingly practical, and genuinely fun to drive. At a closed-course event, it’s impossible to assess real-world range or ride refinement on Philippine roads, but initial impressions are indeed strong. At a price of P2,588,000, Tesla Model Y buyers now have a more compelling reason to pause before signing on the dotted line. A full road test will confirm whether the Sealion 7 delivers on this promising start.
