Mercedes-Benz has introduced a comprehensively updated version of the GLS, its flagship full-size SUV, highlighting improvements in performance, digital technology, and passenger comfort. Positioned as the “S-Class of SUVs,” the new GLS continues the brand’s 140-year focus on engineering and luxury.

The GLS 580 4MATIC now boasts an impressive output of 395 kW, a notable increase from the previous 380 kW, and torque has been elevated to 750 Nm. This enhancement is made possible by incorporating a flat-plane crankshaft, an upgraded turbocharger, and refined combustion components, all of which contribute to greater efficiency and a smoother driving experience.

Additionally, the GLS 450 4MATIC has undergone valuable improvements, with torque now reaching 560 Nm. Key advancements include a more powerful electric auxiliary compressor and optimizations to the cylinder head and combustion process, further enhancing performance and efficiency.

Diesel variants, the GLS 350d 4MATIC and GLS 450d 4MATIC, now feature an electrically heated catalyst for better emissions control. Both use lighter aluminum engine components and technologies such as NANOSLIDE cylinder liners to improve efficiency.

All engines are equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and integrated starter generator, enabling functions such as boost, coasting, and energy recuperation. Mercedes-Benz says this setup improves fuel economy and makes start-stop transitions smoother.

The GLS continues to offer E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, an advanced suspension system that adjusts damping and ride characteristics in real time. The system analyzes driving conditions up to 1,000 times per second and can control each wheel individually to reduce body roll, pitch, and dive.

AIRMATIC air suspension remains standard, now paired with cloud-based damper regulation that prepares the suspension for upcoming road conditions using shared vehicle data. The system adjusts damping before encountering bumps to improve comfort, especially for rear passengers.

The new GLS features an updated assistance system powered by a water-cooled processor and the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). The SUV uses ten exterior cameras, up to five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to monitor its surroundings.

Available systems include adaptive cruise control, enhanced driving assistance packages, and automated parking functions. The parking assist system can now detect spaces earlier and perform maneuvers faster, including exiting parking spots.

Additional features, such as a reversing assist function and a wheel rim protection warning, will be introduced after launch.

At the core of the updated GLS is MB.OS, which integrates vehicle functions and supports over-the-air updates. The system uses artificial intelligence and cloud connectivity to continually improve functionality.

The standard MBUX Superscreen spans the dashboard with three 12.3-inch displays under a single glass panel. The system supports over 40 apps, including streaming, gaming, and productivity tools.

Rear passengers get two 11.6-inch displays as part of the high-end entertainment system, along with removable remote controls for accessing media and vehicle settings.

The MBUX Virtual Assistant has been upgraded to support more complex voice interactions and uses AI to provide more personalized responses.

Navigation combines the Mercedes-Benz interface with Google Maps technology, while augmented reality features overlay directions onto live camera views.

The refreshed GLS adopts a more upright Mercedes-Benz hood ornament, a design traditionally associated with the S-Class. In some markets, the emblem is illuminated.

The front fascia features a larger grille with chrome accents and contour lighting, along with redesigned bumpers. Updated headlamps and taillights feature a star pattern for brand identity.

The SUV also introduces new paint options and wheel designs, including 21- and 22-inch variants.

Mercedes-Benz has fitted the GLS with its latest DIGITAL LIGHT system using micro-LED technology. The system produces a larger and brighter light field while consuming less energy. High beam range can reach up to 600 meters.

The GLS remains a seven-seater as standard, with three fully electric rows. The third row can accommodate passengers up to 1.94 meters tall.

Interior updates include new materials, trim options, and a redesigned steering wheel with touch controls. A new “Beech Brown” color option has been added, along with additional wood and aluminum trims.

The SUV offers up to 2,400 liters of cargo space with the rear seats folded. A panoramic roof is now standard.

Comfort features include multi-contour seats with massage functions, five-zone climate control, and improved seat ventilation. The rear cabin can be configured as a work or entertainment space with the optional Rear Comfort Package Plus.

The GLS is equipped with innovative digital vehicle key functionality, allowing users to conveniently lock, unlock, and start their vehicle using a smartphone.

Additionally, the integration of Mercedes pay+ provides seamless in-car payment services, enabling users to purchase digital features directly from the vehicle and enhancing the overall driving experience.

For those who need to stay connected on the go, video conferencing applications such as Microsoft Teams are available, enabling passengers to engage in meetings while traveling, always with safety considerations in mind.

To further improve the driving environment, the GLS features a state-of-the-art multi-stage air filtration system that significantly enhances cabin air quality by filtering out fine particles and pollutants, refreshing the air about every 90 seconds.

Lastly, the ENERGIZING COMFORT programs, along with the seat massage features, are designed to promote passenger well-being, making long trips more enjoyable and comfortable.

The GLS remains the largest SUV in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, and the company says the updates reinforce its status as a flagship model that combines performance, technology, and luxury.
