Mazda Philippines has launched the third-generation Mazda CX-5 in the local market, positioning the compact SUV with updated styling, a larger cabin, and hybrid power for the first time in the nameplate’s history.

Steven Tan, Mazda Philippines President and CEO, said the CX-5 has remained a core part of the brand’s lineup since Bermaz took over Mazda’s exclusive distributorship in the country. He noted that the new generation pairs an updated human-machine interface with the Jinba-Ittai driving character and Kodo design language that define the brand, alongside improved packaging and ride quality.

Pricing for the CX-5 2.5L AWD HEV Premium Plus is at P2.495M. As with all Mazdas, the CX-5 comes with a three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty and a complimentary five-year service plan for worry-free ownership.

Dimensions have grown across the board. Compared to its predecessor, the new CX-5 is 115mm longer, 15mm wider, and 30mm taller, with a wheelbase extended by 115mm. Mazda says this translates to more cabin space, including best-in-class second-row legroom. Rear knee clearance increases by 64mm and headroom by 29mm, while the rear door opening is wider by 70mm. A wider scuff plate and a lowered hip point are meant to make entry and exit easier. Cargo floor depth has also increased by roughly 45mm, allowing taller items to be stored upright.

Exterior changes include a raised front end, wider bumper openings, and front wing lines that Mazda says improve visibility from the driver’s seat. A trapezoidal design element separates the body from the lower cladding, a detail inspired by the traditional Japanese joinery technique kigumi. Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels with a black metallic finish, gloss black lower cladding, linear LED taillights, block “MAZDA” lettering at the rear in place of the badge, and a hands-free power tailgate. Six exterior colors are offered, including a new Navy Blue Mica alongside Soul Red Crystal, Rhodium White, Machine Gray, Jet Black, and Aero Gray.

Inside, the CX-5 gets a horizontal dashboard layout with a 15.6-inch central touchscreen that now houses climate controls previously handled by physical switches. The touchscreen also provides access to a 360-degree View Monitor, voice assistance, and streaming and navigation apps. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and head-up display are included, along with capacitive steering wheel switches that combine slide-gesture and rocker-style operation for functions like Mi-Drive mode selection and media controls. Audio comes from a 12-speaker Bose system with Perceptual Sound Rendering, tuned specifically for the cabin.

Cabin materials include Japanese Sen Wood trim and genuine tan leather seats with powered adjustment, driver memory presets, and ventilation. Ambient lighting on the front door trims offers seven color options, and a panoramic sunroof is fitted.

This generation marks the CX-5’s debut on Mazda’s new E/E Architecture+ electrical platform, which the company says enables faster processing, improved connectivity, and over-the-air update capability.

In terms of safety, the CX-5 has earned five-star ratings from Euro NCAP and ANCAP, as well as a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. Its Mazda i-Activsense suite includes front and rear Smart Brake Support, upgraded Blind Spot Monitoring, Driver Monitoring with Driver Attention Alert, Cruising and Traffic Support with Lane Change Assist, and Radar Cruise Control with Emergency Lane Keeping.

Chassis updates include softer springs, revised anti-roll bar sizing, retuned dampers, and increased front and rear rebound damping, aimed at better body control at low piston speeds and improved vibration absorption at higher speeds. Steering has been recalibrated for a lighter but more precise feel, and throttle response has been adjusted for more consistent acceleration. Additional sound-deadening material and a balancer shaft on the engine target cabin noise and vibration.

Power comes from a new 2.5-liter e-Skyactiv-G engine paired with Mazda’s hybrid system, the first time hybrid technology has been offered on the CX-5. Output is rated at 181 PS and 242 Nm, with peak power arriving at 5,000 rpm instead of the outgoing engine’s 6,000 rpm, and torque below 4,500 rpm improved by up to 19 percent. The engine is mated to a recalibrated six-speed automatic transmission with revised shift mapping and updated torque converter control, aimed at reducing shift frequency.

Steven Tan says the CX-5 remains a significant part of Mazda’s global lineup, with cumulative sales reaching five million units, and expressed confidence that the new generation will continue that track record.
