More than 50 percent of the vehicle—around 2,700 components—has been newly developed or re-engineered. The update is also part of what Mercedes-Benz says is the most ambitious product launch programme in its history.
The updated S-Class adopts a more assertive exterior design, led by a newly illuminated grille that is enlarged by around 20 percent and fitted with redesigned 3D chrome stars. For the first time on the S-Class, Mercedes-Benz is offering an optionally illuminated upright Mercedes star, integrating it into the car’s overall light signature.
The front lighting also introduces a revised DIGITAL LIGHT twin-star headlamp design, while the rear receives new taillights featuring three chrome-framed star elements. Mercedes-Benz also adds an integrated light projector in the side sill trim that can cast “Mercedes-Benz” lettering onto the ground beside the vehicle.
Mercedes-Benz says the new S-Class improves night visibility with an upgraded DIGITAL LIGHT system using micro-LED technology and a new chip. The high-resolution illumination field expands by around 40 percent compared to the previous system, delivering brighter high beams with reduced energy consumption.
The updated system includes ULTRA RANGE high beam with a reach of up to 600 metres, and it can swivel to improve coverage. A partial high-beam function is designed to better detect poorly lit road users without dazzling others. Mercedes-Benz says cornering light performance also improves when camera data and map intelligence are combined, supported by in-house software integrated into the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS).
The S-Class continues to offer extensive customization through the MANUFAKTUR program, including exclusive paint finishes and leather packages. Two new MANUFAKTUR paint colors are now available as standard options:
MANUFAKTUR black sparkling, featuring glass flakes
MANUFAKTUR verdesilver magno, a matte finish version of verdesilver
Mercedes-Benz is also introducing MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure, allowing customers to choose from more than 150 paint colors and over 400 interior colors. Additional options include illuminated door sills with brand lettering, steering-wheel variants, and emblem packages. Customers can finalize specifications through a visualization tool, with consultations available at the Center of Excellence in Sindelfingen or at a customer’s preferred location.
At the center of the new S-Class is MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System), paired with a new service-oriented electrical and electronic architecture. Mercedes-Benz describes it as a purpose-built “supercomputer” that manages assistance systems, infotainment, and driving performance.
MB.OS connects to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud to enable over-the-air updates for multiple vehicle functions, aiming to keep the S-Class updated throughout its life cycle. MB.OS also serves as the base for MB.DRIVE and the latest generation of MBUX.
The new S-Class uses a water-cooled computing system and a sensor suite comprising 10 external cameras, 5 radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Mercedes-Benz says AI algorithms trained on fleet data process sensor input to interpret surrounding traffic conditions.
Standard features include MB.DRIVE ASSIST, with Distance Assist DISTRONIC with Steering Assist and Lane Change Assist. The system also adds Evasive Steering Function Plus, which steers around objects in the vehicle’s lane to help avoid collisions.
Optional upgrades include Proactive Lane Change Assist for automated lane changes and MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO, which adds functions such as automated braking at stop signs and traffic lights. Mercedes-Benz notes that availability depends on market regulations and whether features are purchased as factory options or Digital Extras through the Mercedes-Benz Store.
MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO is available in China at launch, with the US to follow later. Mercedes-Benz says other markets, including Europe, will receive the system once regulations permit.
Mercedes-Benz adds more capability to its parking suite. MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST can detect spaces on both sides earlier and supports angled parking for the first time. It can also recognize spaces not defined only by white lines, and can assist with exiting a parking space even after a manual parking manoeuvre.
A reverse manoeuvring function—launching first in China—can allow the vehicle to retrace its path when reversing under certain conditions, showing a reversing camera image and a planned path graphic on the main screen.
MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360 adds new surround-view displays and an updated user interface. A Visual Rim Protection distance warning will be introduced later.
The new S-Class introduces the fourth generation of MBUX, powered by MB.OS. Mercedes-Benz says the system integrates AI using ChatGPT4o, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini, combining multiple AI agents.
The updated MBUX Virtual Assistant (“Hey Mercedes”) supports multi-turn dialogues and short-term memory. The assistant appears as an avatar on the Zero Layer with dynamic colors and animations, with two new avatar designs: a human-like figure and “LittleBenz.”
The updated interface includes an enhanced MBUX Zero Layer with recently used apps, customizable folders, and swipe navigation. Mercedes-Benz says more than 40 apps can be installed, including audio, video, productivity, and entertainment options.
As standard, the new S-Class features the MBUX Superscreen, combining a 14.4-inch central display and a 12.3-inch passenger display under a continuous glass surface. The passenger display supports entertainment such as streaming, gaming, and apps while driving, depending on local regulations. A camera-based privacy function adjusts the passenger screen to reduce driver distraction.
The new S-Class navigation system is based on Google Maps, developed through the Mercedes-Benz and Google partnership. It also includes one of the first integrations of Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent for in-vehicle conversational services tied to Google Maps.
Mercedes-Benz introduces MBUX Surround Navigation, combining driver-assistance visualization with a 3D representation of the vehicle’s surroundings and real-time routing on the driver display. The MBUX Augmented Reality Head-up Display projects navigation cues such as arrows, lane guidance, and points of interest onto the road view.
New productivity features include MBUX Notes and MBUX Calendar. Mercedes-Benz says MBUX Notes supports dictation in multiple languages and can summarize and structure content into bullet points using AI. Notes can be shared via Gmail or Outlook, or synced to OneNote. Mercedes-Benz says the system includes data protection measures and does not permanently store notes with third parties.
Mercedes-Benz has revised the interior with a redesigned instrument panel built around the Superscreen, new door trims, and an updated center console with wood inlays. The console adds illuminated cupholders and two side-by-side wireless charging areas for smartphones. USB-C charging supports power delivery of up to 100 W.
The multifunction steering wheel has been updated for improved ergonomics, and Mercedes-Benz says it has reintroduced physical control elements, including rocker switches for the limiter and DISTRONIC, and a roller for volume, following customer feedback.
The S-Class remains available in two wheelbase options, including a long-wheelbase version with increased rear space. A four-seat First-Class rear compartment is available in the long-wheelbase model, featuring a full-length rear center console with storage, wireless charging, fast USB-C ports, a refrigerated compartment, and temperature-controlled cupholders. Folding tables are offered for working or dining.
Two new detachable MBUX rear remote controls allow passengers to operate functions such as climate control and window shades, as well as the 13.1-inch rear entertainment displays, which now include integrated HD cameras for video conferencing through Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Webex.
The app portfolio includes streaming services such as Disney+ and RIDEVU by Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Two Burmester audio systems are offered: an enhanced Burmester 3D surround sound system with silver speaker caps in the mirror triangle, and a Burmester high-end 4D surround sound system with Dolby Atmos.
A new thermal comfort feature is an optional heated seat belt that delivers up to 44°C of warmth to front passengers. It is activated through the seat heating button and is intended to improve comfort in cold weather while encouraging proper belt fit.
Mercedes-Benz also introduces Digital Vent Control and an electric filter system that ionizes and removes fine particles, including particles described as up to 1,200 times smaller than a grain of table salt. Mercedes-Benz says cabin air can be purified roughly every 90 seconds.
Mercedes-Benz adds a new 20-inch multi-spoke wheel produced by high-pressure casting, featuring a 50-cross-spoke design. The wheel is finished in Tremolit Metallic High Sheen.
Mercedes-Benz also announced the new S 680 GUARD 4MATIC, offering certified VR10, described as the highest civilian protection level. Mercedes-Benz says it is currently the only series-production limousine to offer certified VR10 ballistic protection for both transparent and opaque body areas ex factory.
The model combines the Integrated Protection System (iSS) with a discreet aluminium outer skin, and is validated with biofidelic dummy testing. It is also the first GUARD saloon to pair 4MATIC with a 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine.
GUARD-specific systems include fire extinguishing and emergency fresh-air systems, a Threat Alarm System, external communication, and servo-assisted doors. The rear compartment can be configured as a connected business lounge with rear-seat entertainment and video conferencing features.
Updated powertrains include revised V8, upgraded inline-six, diesel OM 656 Evo, and 100 km PHEV range
The updated S-Class lineup includes electrified 8- and 6-cylinder petrol engines, 6-cylinder diesel engines, and plug-in hybrid variants.
The new M 177 Evo V8 in the Mercedes-Benz S 580 4MATIC Saloon (long) produces 395 kW (537 hp) and 750 Nm. Mercedes-Benz says updates include mild-hybrid support, revised injection, optimized intake and exhaust ports, a revised intake camshaft, a flat-plane crank with a new firing order, and turbocharger refinements for improved response and efficiency.
The M 256 Evo inline-six in the S 450 4MATIC (long) and S 500 4MATIC (long) delivers up to 600 Nm of torque, rising to 640 Nm with overtorque, supported by a more powerful electric auxiliary compressor and other revisions. Mercedes-Benz also highlights additional insulation for improved noise and vibration suppression.
Plug-in hybrid variants offer an electric range of around 100 km, with system output increased by up to 55 kW over the previous engine generation. Petrol particulate filters and pressurised tanks are now standard worldwide.
Diesel variants include the OM 656 Evo, featuring the first series-production use of an electrically heated catalytic converter for faster exhaust aftertreatment, plus updates to exhaust gas recirculation, cooling, and crankcase ventilation.
All three engine families use a 17 kW integrated starter-generator (ISG) with a 48-volt electrical system supporting coasting, boost, recuperation, and smoother start-stop operation.
Ride comfort is supported by standard AIRMATIC air suspension or optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, both updated with intelligent damping that can adjust before long speed bumps. The system uses Car-to-X information via the Mercedes Intelligent Cloud, and Mercedes-Benz says it has applied for a patent for the function.
Rear-axle steering is now standard at 4.5 degrees, with an optional 10-degree setup. Mercedes-Benz says the 10-degree configuration reduces the turning circle by almost two metres on the long-wheelbase model.
Mercedes-Benz says safety remains a key focus for the S-Class, combining the MB.DRIVE suite with updated restraint systems. The adaptive restraint system includes PRE-SAFE Impulse seat belt pretensioners, dual-stage load limiters, updated airbag inflators, and an active vent in the passenger airbag. A passenger kneebag and optional rear airbags provide up to 15 airbags, managed by an airbag control unit that calculates the most effective deployment strategy.
Rear passengers can also benefit from beltbags, which are designed to reduce chest loads during severe frontal impacts, while rear airbags can reduce head and neck loads. PRE-SAFE Impulse Side is available for front occupants, and vehicles equipped with E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL can elevate the vehicle before a side impact to help manage crash forces.
