De Tomaso Automobili has officially revealed the production version of the P72, a retro-styled supercar that pays tribute to the brand’s 65-year legacy. First introduced as a concept at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the P72 has now been fully realized and is ready for the road.

Inspired by the 1965 De Tomaso P70, the P72 draws on a historic collaboration between Alejandro De Tomaso and Carroll Shelby. The car echoes the design and philosophy of a bygone era and aims to redefine the analog driving experience with today’s modern technology and demands.
At the core of the P72 is an all-new carbon fiber chassis. The monocoque is made from a single, uninterrupted piece of 4×4 twill weave carbon fiber without any bonded sections. This rare construction method improves rigidity, lowers weight, and enhances structural purity.

The chassis was developed from scratch over several years, allowing engineers to define suspension geometry and weight distribution precisely. The result is a low center of gravity and a balanced driving feel that delivers a purely mechanical, intuitive experience. Encasing the structure is a full carbon fiber body, offered in heritage-inspired colors or as exposed carbon.

Inside, the P72 rejects modern digital interfaces. There are no screens, infotainment systems, or connectivity features beyond a discreet phone holder. Instead, the cabin is equipped with analog dials and bespoke switchgear. The centerpiece is a polished exposed metal linkage for the six-speed manual transmission, offering a tactile, mechanical connection to the car.

Attention to craftsmanship is evident throughout. The cabin features hand-stitched leather, machined aluminum components, and finishes available in bead-blasted, brushed, or polished treatments. Each piece is made by artisans with the care typically reserved for fine mechanical timepieces.

Powering the P72 is a hand-assembled, 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine explicitly developed for this platform. It produces 700 horsepower and 820 Nm of torque. Rather than focusing on top speed, the engine is tuned for immediate, in-gear performance, offering a raw and direct power delivery. A 1960s-style header design adds to the engine’s character and sound.

The suspension features a push-rod setup and a three-way manually adjustable damping system tailored for a traditional, analog driving experience. Paired with a low-drag aerodynamic design, the P72 aims to reward skilled driving over sheer speed.
The production model revealed is a reference vehicle built outside the limited run of 72 units. Each of those 72 cars will be individually commissioned and customized by their owners.
Norman Choi, CEO of De Tomaso Automobili, said: “The P72 was our promise to faithfully revive a historic marque. This first production-specification vehicle embodies everything we stand for: a mechanical soul, timeless beauty, and a driving experience that rises above modern convention.”
Deliveries to customers are scheduled to begin in late 2025. With the P72, De Tomaso reaffirms its focus on emotional driving and craftsmanship in an increasingly digital and automated industry.
